Overview:

The Podcast Multimedia Primer is a 6-month (24-week) immersive program where participants will learn the art and science of producing two podcasts: the Justice Beat Talk Show and the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show. Participants will gain hands-on experience and essential skills in all aspects of producing a podcast from pre-production, live production, and post-production.

Weekly Breakdown

Weeks 1-4: Foundations of Podcasting

  • Week 1: Introduction to Podcasts

    • Topics: History of podcasting, genres, and types.

    • Activities: Analyze different podcast formats; identify effective storytelling techniques.

  • Week 2: Pre-Production Essentials

    • Topics: Concept development, scripting, and episode structuring.

    • Activities: Outline and script an episode for the Justice Beat Talk Show.

  • Week 3: Technical Skills and Equipment

    • Topics: Live-streaming softward basics (Restream, Zoom, etc.).

    • Activities: Set up audio recording equipment and do basic sound checks.

  • Week 4: Writing for Audio

    • Topics: Scriptwriting for audio; how to engage listeners.

    • Activities: Workshop on drafting engaging scripts.

 

Weeks 5-12: Producing the Justice Beat Talk Show

  • Week 5: Conducting Interviews

    • Topics: Techniques for interviewing guests, question strategies.

    • Activities: Practice interview sessions in pairs.

  • Week 6: Structuring Your Show

    • Topics: Designing episode flow and creating segments.

    • Activities: Develop a show structure for the Justice Beat Talk Show.

  • Week 7: Recording Techniques

    • Topics: Best practices for capturing high-quality audio; microphone placement and environmental considerations.

    • Activities: Conduct a mock recording session

  • Week 8: Editing and Sound Design

    • Topics: Audio editing techniques; incorporating sound effects and music for an enhanced listening experience.

    • Activities: Edit the recorded segment from Week 7, applying learned editing techniques.

  • Week 9: Post-Production Process

    • Topics: Reviewing, finalizing, and preparing episodes for distribution; YouTube shorts, creating show notes and promotional materials using OPUS Clips

    • Activities: Team collaboration to finalize the mock episode of the Justice Beat Talk Show.

  • Week 10: Marketing Your Podcast

    • Topics: Promotional strategies; understanding the target audience for effective social media marketing.

    • Activities: Develop a marketing plan for promoting the Justice Beat Talk Show, including social media strategies.

  • Week 11: Distribution Strategies

    • Topics: How to choose hosting platforms; understanding the use of RSS feeds for distribution.

    • Activities: Publish the first episode of the Justice Beat Talk Show on a podcast hosting platform.

  • Week 12: Gathering Audience Feedback

    • Topics: Techniques for collecting listener feedback; analyzing engagement metrics.

    • Activities: Analyze the initial audience feedback and performance metrics from the first episode to inform future content.

 

Weeks 13-20: Producing the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show

  • Week 13: Understanding Youth Perspectives

    • Topics: Why youth voices matter in media; engaging young audiences.

    • Activities: Brainstorm relevant topics for the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show.

  • Week 14: Guest Management for Youth

    • Topics: Techniques for reaching out to and scheduling youth guests; effective communication with and about youth topics.

    • Activities: Role-play inviting potential youth guests to the podcast.

  • Week 15: Recording Sessions for Youth

    • Topics: Capturing authentic stories and perspectives from young guests.

    • Activities: Conduct mock recording sessions with teammates focusing on building rapport.

  • Week 16: Creative Storytelling for Youth Audiences

    • Topics: Strategies for crafting engaging narratives that resonate with young listeners.

    • Activities: Workshop to develop storytelling techniques and format segments.

  • Week 17: Editing and Finalizing Youth Episodes

    • Topics: Advanced editing techniques tailored for the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show.

    • Activities: Edit the recorded segments, focusing on clarity, pacing, and engagement.

  • Week 18: Launch Preparation for Youth Talk Show

    • Topics: Effective marketing and promotional strategies specifically for youth audiences.

    • Activities: Create and execute a launch plan for the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show, including social media rollouts.

  • Week 19: Post-Launch Analysis

    • Topics: Collecting and analyzing feedback; understanding audience interaction.

    • Activities: Conduct a review meeting to discuss audience feedback and lesson learned from the launch.

  • Week 20: Refinement and Continuous Improvement

Weeks 21-24: Capstone Project and Internship Preparation

  • Week 21: Capstone Project Planning

    • Topics: Integrating skills and learnings from the entire internship into a final comprehensive capstone project.

    • Activities: Outline the capstone project that includes an original podcast episode.

  • Week 22: Capstone Project Development

    • Topics: Work on producing the capstone project; apply techniques and skills acquired throughout the internship.

    • Activities: Develop and finalize the capstone podcast episode.

  • Week 23: Final Presentations

    • Topics: Presenting the capstone projects to peers and industry mentors.

    • Activities: Participants deliver presentations, showcase their projects, and receive constructive feedback.

  • Week 24: Reflection and Next Steps

    • Topics: Discuss professional pathways in media production; preparing for the next level of internships.

    • Activities: Compile lessons learned and set personal goals for the future; guidance on pursuing the Next Generation Media Internship Program.
